The release cord on your garage door is a very important safety and security feature. The first thing to do is hit the door button. The next step is to go to the inside of the garage door. Work with the door down.

There are several reasons why you may have to pull the cord thereby disengaging the garage door from the opener. The good news is turning off the release is as easy as turning it on simply pull the cord again hit your garage door remote and your garage door should pop right back on track. The emergency release cord is the red rope that hangs from the door trolley. Some units will actually reconnect themselves but this is not typically the case.

Door must be in down position. You need to check the release handle and make sure that it is on the track. Pull the emergency release cord. If simply hitting the button does not work you will have to take more action.

Pull the end through until the handle is six feet above the floor. That way you won t lose a finger if your unsuspecting housemate hits the remote button while you re working. You might have to do this if the opener malfunctions or loses power. Once released you have to manually open and close the door until you re engage it.
